Job description
Under the supervision of the protection delegate, the protection field officer is responsible for the implementation of protection activities (in particular the protection of the civilian population and detention), including cross-cutting themes such as sexual violence, health care at risk (HCiD) and child protection (PE).
The officer participates in the analysis of the security situation and humanitarian issues in his area of intervention. It identifies protection problems and ensures that investigations are adequately handled following violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and other humanitarian consequences of the armed conflict.
Job Main responsibilities
1. Provides a comprehensive and documented analysis of the humanitarian, political, economic and security situation in its area of intervention, focusing on protection concerns, such as problems related to farmers, internally displaced people, the Borno model, etc.
2. Identifies protection challenges from various sources and contributes to the implementation of the sub-delegation's protection strategy.
3. Carries out release checks and debriefings in his area of intervention and supports the delegate in the preparation of visits related to detention.
4. Participates in first aid (FAS) and international humanitarian law (IHL) trainings and disseminates information to weapon carriers, presenting protection work and addressing specific themes such as sxual violence (VS), child protection (PE) and health care at risk (HCiD) when relevant.
5. Documents alleged violations of international humanitarian law by interacting with victims, witnesses and other sources, and enters this information into the protection database (PROT6).
6. Provides support for other protection activities as needed, including case tracing, family ties to be restored (LFR) monitoring for prisoners and registration of vulnerable people.
7. Contributes to the mapping of stakeholders involved in protection activities in its area of intervention by communicating with various sources, NGOs, UN agencies and awareness-raising places. Works closely with colleagues in the field to ensure the coherence of messages and the alignment of interlocutors on protection themes and ICRC initiatives.
8. Participates in networking and dialogue with relevant interlocutors, ensures interaction with other departments (Assistance, Prevention and Cooperation), sub-delegations and offices, the National Society of the Nigerian Red Cross (SRN) and external contacts.
9. Ensures the accurate and high-quality entry of information in the protection database and proactively analyzes this information.
10. Reports on protection problems for individual cases and guarantees a global response from the ICRC, taking into account various sectors such as economic security (ECOSEC), health, protection, restoring family ties (RFL), mental health and psychosocial support (MST), and external orientations.
11. Ensures accurate translations, both oral and written, between Hausa and English (and vice versa), between Kanuri and English (and vice versa), and in other relevant local languages if necessary.
12. Collaborates regularly with the health teams in the field to monitor problems related to health care at risk (HCiD) and participates in first aid training in its intervention area.
13. Ensures the implementation of strategies to combat sexual violence (VS) and child protection (PE) in its intervention area at the level of the sub-delegation.
Required qualifications and experience
1. Has a university degree in international relations, social sciences, law or a related field.
2. Has 3 to 5 years of work experience within a humanitarian organization, an NGO or a CSO.
3. Demonstrates a solid understanding of the political, security and socio-cultural dynamics of North-Eastern Nigeria in general.
4. MOST have excellent communication skills, including fluency in written and oral English, as well as strong report writing skills.
5. Fluency in Hausa and Kanuri is essential, and knowledge of other local languages is considered an asset.

1. Understands well the principle of "do no harm".
2. Has good interview and communication skills with people in difficult situations.
3. Demonstrates good public speaking skills and a proven ability to effectively engage and present the ICRC to interlocutors at different levels (beneficiaries, security personnel, community leaders, religious groups, other humanitarian actors).
4. Advanced mastery of computer tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
