Existing since October 20, 2016, AHSF focuses on improving the quality of life of vulnerable populations throughout the communities of north-eastern Nigeria.

Project implementation

Implement the Targeted Food Supplementation Program (TSFP) in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) funded by the project, aimed at preventing acute malnutrition in children aged 24 to 59 months and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) in the populations of host communities in the local government areas (LGA) of KAGA, MMC and MAGUMERI in Borno State.

The project will carry out various activities aimed at preventing acute malnutrition among children aged 6 to 59 months and PLW in the host communities of KAGA, MMC and MAGUMERI by the end of December 2023. These activities include :

• The treatment of moderate acute malnutrition in children aged 6 to 59 months and pregnant and lactating women (PLW).
• Prevention of deterioration of the nutritional status of vulnerable groups.
• Strengthening government systems to provide comprehensive, high-quality management of acute malnutrition (AMM).
• Strengthening community structures to ensure the management and facilitation of the provision of community nutrition activities.

Job description

The Nutrition Assistant will be responsible for the planning and implementation of nutrition activities in the AHSF food security and nutrition intervention areas in the Borno LGA, with a focus on internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable host communities. Their tasks will include the complete mobilization of the community for the nutritional screening of children under five, the creation and supervision of care support groups, as well as infant and young child feeding training (IYCF).

Job Main tasks and responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Officer and in collaboration with the Project Manager and other collaborators of the project as well as the Base, the Nutrition Assistant will have to :

• Carry out the screening of the nutritional status of children under five years of age in their designated areas and refer cases of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) to stabilization centers/MAM.
• Coordinate and collaborate with the leaders of the community mobilization teams and the mothers responsible for the care groups for the implementation of the follow-up of referred SAM cases.
• Follow up on new admissions of malnourished children.
• Liaise with existing community structures, including groups, individuals, women's groups and religious leaders when possible.
• Perform daily, weekly and monthly reports.
• Collect and track weekly community-level data, including median arm circumference (MUAC) screening results during house-to-house visits, in accordance with the AHSF standard nutrition statistical report forms.
• Submit a weekly nutrition and health report to the Nutrition Officer for later sharing with the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer.
• Carry out day-to-day nutrition activities.
• Provide training in nutrition (IYCF) and hygiene practices.
• Ensure the follow-up of referrals of all severely malnourished children to the stabilization center.
• Report any problems in a timely manner to the Nutrition Officer or the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer.
• Participate in the field work of the nutrition survey (impact assessment).
• Perform cooking demonstrations.
• Treat beneficiaries with dignity and respect UNICEF's Code of Ethics and Conduct, the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

Additional responsibilities :

This job description is not exhaustive, and the employee can also perform other related tasks according to the needs and instructions of his supervisor.

Job requirements

• Minimum of a bachelor's degree or a BTS in nutrition, public health, community health or another related field.
• 3 years of experience in the implementation of community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), infant and young child feeding (IYCF) and other community nutrition activities. Experience in WFP-funded projects is preferred.
• Originally from Borno with a good command of Kanuri.
• Mastery of computer applications (Microsoft Office - Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Excellent team management, project management and representation skills.
• The ability to speak local languages would be an asset.
• Previous NGO experience in the management of mobilization in different interventions (e.g., TSFP, BSFP, WASH, Nutrition) is desired.
• Commitment to the mission, values and policies of the AHSF.

Minimum requirements :

• Qualifications in nutrition and Health (BSc and BTS).
• Good communication.
• Ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable populations.
• Proven experience in a related field.
• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Accuracy and speed in the execution of tasks.
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

Desired skills / competencies :

Essential :

• Professionalism, motivation, openness, creativity, maturity, responsibility, flexibility and cultural sensitivity.
• Good understanding of the cultural context.

Preferred :

• Previous experience in similar roles in a humanitarian context (WFP-funded projects).
• Good knowledge of the intervention area and the local context.
